54 Below Loves Brazil and Broadway at Birdland

If the dog days of August have got you down, head to 54 Below (254 W 54th St, 54Below.com) for a celebration of Brazilian music and artists in their 54 Below Loves Brazil series.  Headlining is handsome, out, Tony-winner Paulo Szot who will bring his new collection of American Songbook, Brazilian melodies and jazz classics to the stage Aug 5-11.  Joining Szot in the series will be Chico Pinheiro & The Brazilian Dream Band, Maucha Adnet & Helio Alves, and Anat Cohen & Choro Adventuroso.  (Check out 54 Below’s website for the complete schedule!)  Additionally, don’t miss the slinky seductress Ute Lemper Aug 14-17, as well as the phenomenally talented Ann Hampton Callaway & Liz Callaway in their sensational Sibling Revelry show Aug 28-31.

Meanwhile, the Broadway at Birdland Concert Series (315 W 44th St, BirdlandJazz.com) boasts an impressive line-up of crooners in August: Clark Thorell in Songs I Wish I’d Written Aug 5, Tony-winner Steve Kazee Aug 11, Julie Halston in Classical Julie Aug 12 & 19, James Barbour Aug 26, and – of course – Jim Caruso’s Cast Party every Monday night at 9:30 pm.  Caruso, New York’s scintillating hostess with the mostess, presides over this weekly party where anyone can show up and anything can happen.  And usually does!
