2014 Winter Preview

From King Lear to Carole King to Charles Busch to Rocky Balboa to Aladdin, the winter is filled with theatrical delights!

King Lear (Jan 7)  – Chichester Festival Theatre’s production starring Tony-winner Frank Langella transfers to BAM.  A Man’s A Man (Jan 10) – Classic Stage Company puts on a new production of Brecht drama with a new score by Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening) and starring Justin Vivian Bond.  Beautiful – The Carole King Musical (Jan 12) – Jessie Mueller stars in a bio-musical about songwriter King and her salad days with Gerry Goffin, Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann at the Brill building.  Machinal (Jan 16) – Roundabout is reviving Sophie Treadwell’s 1928 potboiler about a woman who indulges in an illicit love affair, starring Rebecca Hall in her long-awaited Broadway debut.  Loot (Jan 16) – Red Bull Theater revives Joe Orten’s black comedy at the Lucille Lortel.  Outside Mullingar (Jan 23) – MTC mounts the world premiere of a new romantic comedy by John Patrick Shanley (Doubt), directed by Doug Hughes and starring Brian F. O’Byrne and Debra Messing (Will & Grace).

Bronx Bombers (Feb 6) – Eric Simonson’s new play about the New York Yankees transfers from Primary Stages to the Circle in the Square.  The Tribute Artist (Feb 9) – Charles Busch’s new comedy about an out-of-work female impersonator (Busch) who takes on the identity of his elderly landlady when she dies in order to keep her Greenwich Village townhouse gets its world-premiere at Primary Stages.  The Bridges of Madison County (Feb 16) – Kelli O’Hara and hunky Steven Pasquale star in Jason Robert Brown and Marsha Norman’s new musical based on the film about an Iowan housewife who falls in love with a photographer.  Anthony and Cleopatra (Feb 18) – Tarell Alvin McCraney’s new interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic comes to The Public in a unique co-production with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Miami’s GableStage, starring the handsome Jonathan Cake as Mark Antony and Joaquina Kalukango as Cleopatra.

Rocky (Mar 13) – Stephen Flaherty & Lynn Ahrens new musical adaptation starring Andy Karl as Rocky and Margo Seibert comes to Broadway from Hamburg.  Tales From Red Vienna (Mar 18) – Nina Arianda stars in an MTC world premiere by David Grimm about a post WWI woman struggling to keep a secret life secret.  Aladdin (Mar 20) – Disney’s musical fantasy finally comes to Broadway at the New Amsterdam, flying carpets included!  Les Miserables (Mar 23) – It’s back…again…this time with Ramin Karimloo as Valjean and Will Swenson as Javert.  Mothers and Sons (Mar 24) – Tyne Daly stars in Terrence McNally’s latest about a woman who drops in on her late son’s partner, his new partner and their son.  If/Then (Mar 27) – Idina Menzel stars in Tom Kitt, Brian Yorkey and Michael Greif’s new musical about a woman starting over again in New York and the choices that brings.
